Tip calculator
Bill, tip, how many of you: the per-person number, before the table gets awkward about it.
Guide
How to use it
- Enter the bill total.
- Tap a tip percentage, 10% is the UK restaurant norm, or type a custom figure.
- Set how many people are splitting.
- Read the per-person tile. Done before the card machine arrives.
Examples
Tipping in the UK, honestly
Sit-down service with no service charge on the bill: 10% is standard, 12.5% generous. If a service charge is already added, that is the tip, tipping twice is enthusiasm, not obligation.
London menus increasingly add 12.5% automatically. It is discretionary: you may ask for it to be removed if service disappointed, and since 2024 law, staff must receive 100% of it.
No tip at the bar, rounding up for table service if you like. Taxis: round up or 10% for help with bags. The UK’s rule is that nobody’s rent depends on your tip, unlike across the Atlantic.
Method
How it works
Tip is bill × percentage, the split divides bill plus tip evenly with proper penny rounding. The quick buttons carry the UK’s actual conventions (none, 10, 12.5, 15, 20) rather than the American 18-to-25 scale.
For uneven splits, when one person had the steak and one had soup, the bill splitter page adds a who-had-what mode.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is tipping expected in the UK?
In table-service restaurants, customary but genuinely discretionary. Cafes, pubs and counter service: no expectation, tip jars are appreciation, not wages.
Should I tip on the total including VAT?
Convention tips on the bill as presented (VAT included). Purists who tip pre-VAT are doing arithmetic nobody asked for at 11pm.
What about a service charge already on the bill?
That is the tip. Check the bottom line before adding more, "optional service charge 12.5%" means the decision is made unless you unmake it.
Do card tips reach the staff?
Since the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023 took effect in 2024, 100% of tips and service charges must go to workers, card or cash.
How do we split when someone drank more?
The bill splitter page: assign each person their own items, the rest splits evenly, and the tip shares in proportion.
Why 12.5% as a button?
It is the service-charge convention London exported to menus everywhere, and it splits nicely: one eighth.
