BMI calculator, stones and pounds

Five foot something and so-many stone: enter it exactly as you say it, no converting to metric first, and get the NHS band and your healthy range in stone.

Guide

How to use it

  1. Enter height as feet and inches, weight as stones and pounds (0 to 13.9 in the pounds box).
  2. Your BMI, NHS band and position on the scale appear instantly.
  3. The healthy range for your height is printed in stones and pounds, ready to use.

Examples

Worked examples

5 ft 10, 13 st 5

Converts to 1.778 m and 84.8 kg, BMI 26.8, in the overweight band. Healthy range at that height: roughly 9 st 3 to 12 st 5.

5 ft 3, 9 st 0

1.6 m and 57.2 kg gives BMI 22.3, comfortably in the healthy band.

Half-stone steps

At 5 ft 8, each half stone moves BMI by about 0.7. Useful for setting a target band rather than a single number.

Method

How it works

Feet and inches become metres (× 0.0254 per inch), stones and pounds become kilograms (× 0.45359237 per pound), both exact definitions, then BMI is kg ÷ m² as everywhere else. No rounded shortcut factors, so the result matches NHS tools to the decimal.

The same caveats apply as on the main BMI page: muscle, ethnicity thresholds, pregnancy and under-18s. Nothing you enter leaves your browser.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I calculate BMI straight from stones?

Yes, that is this page: enter feet and inches, stones and pounds, and the conversion to metric happens invisibly with exact factors before the standard formula.

What is a healthy weight for 5 ft 6?

BMI 18.5 to 24.9 at 5 ft 6 works out at roughly 8 st 3 to 11 st 0. Enter your own height and the calculator prints your range in stone.

Why do NHS letters quote kg when I think in stone?

Clinical records are metric. The kg-to-stone converter translates any figure from a letter, or this calculator just takes the stone version directly.

How many pounds are in a stone?

14. So 11 st 7 is 161 lb, and half a stone is 7 lb. The pounds box here accepts 0 to 13.9.

Is the imperial BMI formula different?

There is a version using 703 × lb ÷ in², which is just the metric formula with the conversions baked in. This page converts exactly instead, so the result matches NHS tools to the decimal.

Are my measurements saved?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is transmitted or stored.

25.8 BMI
Overweight

The healthy-weight BMI range (18.5 to 24.9) for your height is roughly 8 st 6 lb to 11 st 5 lb.

74.8 kg ÷ (1.70 m)² = 25.8

BMI is a screening measure for adults, not a diagnosis: it cannot tell muscle from fat, and NHS guidance uses lower thresholds (23 and 27.5) for people of Asian, Black African and some other ethnic backgrounds. It does not apply in pregnancy or under 18. Talk to a GP about what your number means for you.

Everything runs in your browser. Height and weight are never transmitted or stored.
