BMI calculator for women

Straight answer first: the adult BMI formula and NHS bands are the same for all sexes. Here is the calculator, and below it, what actually differs for women.

The real differences

What actually changes for women

Body composition. At the same BMI, women typically carry more body fat and less muscle than men. The formula cannot see this, so two people with identical numbers can have quite different health pictures. It is one reason BMI is a screen, not a diagnosis.

Pregnancy. BMI does not apply while pregnant. A booking BMI is recorded at the first midwife appointment; after that, pregnancy weight is assessed differently. No online calculator, this one included, should be used to judge it.

Life stages. Menopause tends to shift fat storage towards the waist without necessarily moving BMI, which is why NHS advice pairs BMI with waist circumference: for most women, health risk rises above 80 cm regardless of the BMI band.

What does not change. The bands: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 healthy, 25 to 29.9 overweight, 30 plus obese, for every adult, with the lower ethnicity-specific action thresholds (23 and 27.5) applying to women and men alike.

Examples

Worked examples

5 ft 5, 10 st 2

1.651 m and 64.4 kg gives BMI 23.6, in the healthy band, with a healthy range of roughly 7 st 12 to 10 st 7 at that height.

1.62 m, 66 kg

BMI 25.1, just over the healthy line. A number that close to a boundary is a nudge towards the waist tape, not a verdict.

The same number, twice

A netball player and a sedentary office worker can both read 24.9. Same BMI, different body fat, different fitness: exactly the distinction BMI cannot make.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is BMI calculated differently for women?

No. For adults the formula and the NHS bands are identical for all sexes: weight in kg divided by height in metres squared, healthy from 18.5 to 24.9. Sites offering a special female formula are making it up.

Then why does sex matter at all?

Women typically carry more body fat than men at the same BMI, and fat distribution differs. BMI ignores this, which is why waist measurement and, where offered, body fat estimates are useful companions.

What about BMI during pregnancy?

BMI is not valid during pregnancy. Midwives record a booking BMI at the first appointment and then track different measures. Do not use any BMI calculator to judge pregnancy weight.

Does menopause change BMI interpretation?

The bands stay the same, but body composition shifts with age and menopause, with more fat centrally. Waist circumference becomes a more telling companion number.

Do girls use this calculator?

Under-18s should not use adult BMI at all. Children and teenagers are assessed on age-and-sex centile charts, which a GP or school nurse can interpret.

Is anything I enter stored?

BMI calculator for women

Straight answer first: the adult BMI formula and NHS bands are the same for all sexes. Here is the calculator, and below it, what actually differs for women.

26.0 BMI
Overweight

The healthy-weight BMI range (18.5 to 24.9) for your height is roughly 53.5 kg to 72 kg.

75.0 kg ÷ (1.70 m)² = 26.0

BMI is a screening measure for adults, not a diagnosis: it cannot tell muscle from fat, and NHS guidance uses lower thresholds (23 and 27.5) for people of Asian, Black African and some other ethnic backgrounds. It does not apply in pregnancy or under 18. Talk to a GP about what your number means for you.

Everything runs in your browser. Height and weight are never transmitted or stored.
