What is my IP?

Your public address, both versions where available, plus a sober account of what an IP does and does not give away.

Guide

How to use it

  1. The addresses load automatically, IPv4, and IPv6 if your connection has it.
  2. Copy either with its button.
  3. Checking a VPN? Note the address before connecting, connect, then press Check again, a changed address means the tunnel is working.
  4. Remember it is your network’s address: everyone on your home WiFi shows the same one.

Examples

Readings and what they mean

HOME BROADBAND

One IPv4 shared by the whole household, assigned by your ISP, and often changing every few weeks (dynamic addressing). Nothing about the number itself identifies a person.

ON VPN

The address shown belongs to the VPN’s server, often in another city or country. That mismatch with your real location is the entire product working.

MOBILE DATA

Phones typically sit behind carrier-grade NAT: thousands of customers share one public IPv4. Geolocation of mobile IPs is accordingly vague, sometimes hundreds of miles off.

Method

How it works

The page asks api.ipify.org, a widely used public echo service, what address your request arrived from, once for IPv4 and once via the dual-stack endpoint for IPv6. That is this site’s one disclosed exception to the everything-local rule, an IP check cannot be done locally by definition, and the page states it plainly.

What an IP reveals: your ISP and a rough area (the ISP’s routing region, usually city-scale at best). What it does not: your name, street, or browsing history, those require your ISP’s records, which need legal process to open.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is my IP address private information?

Semi-public by design: every site you visit sees it, it is how responses find their way back. Treat it like a postmark, not a password.

Can someone find my house from my IP?

Not from the IP alone, geolocation databases resolve to the ISP’s service area. Linking an address to a household needs the ISP’s logs and a legal order.

Why does my IP keep changing?

Dynamic assignment: ISPs lease addresses from a pool, and reconnections or router restarts often draw a new one. Static IPs are a paid business add-on.

What is the difference between public and local IPs?

The public one (shown here) faces the internet, local ones (192.168.x.x etc.) exist only inside your network, every device has a local address, the router shares one public.

How do I hide my IP?

A VPN or Tor replaces it with theirs, sites then see the relay’s address. This page is the standard before-and-after check for exactly that.

Does this site log my address?

This page has no server of its own to log to, the lookup goes to ipify (their privacy policy covers that request), and this site never receives it.

Your public IPv4

IPv6 · not detected
No IPv6 on this connection, which is common and fine. IPv4 still reaches everything.
What this address reveals

Roughly: your internet provider and an approximate area (usually city-level, sometimes just the ISP’s region), and that is about it. It does not reveal your name, exact address or browsing history to websites, though your ISP can link it to your account, and websites you visit see it on every request.

On a VPN, the address shown here belongs to the VPN server, if you are checking whether your VPN is connected, this page answering with the VPN’s address (not your ISP’s) is the confirmation.

This page has one honest exception to the no-requests rule, disclosed plainly: it asks api.ipify.org (a widely used public service) what address your connection appears from. That is the only request it makes.
