Word unscrambler
Type up to 15 letters (use ? for a blank) and get every word they make, scored and sorted, before you finish typing.
Guide
How to use it
- Type up to 15 letters. Order does not matter and capitals are ignored.
- Type ? for a blank tile, up to two. A wildcard stands for any letter and scores zero.
- Words appear as you type, grouped by length with the longest first. The small number on each tile is that letter's Scrabble value.
- Open Filters to require a starting letter, an ending letter or a sequence the word must contain.
- Tap any word to copy it to your clipboard.
Examples
Worked examples
A famous rack: 256 words, including nine 7-letter words such as RETAINS, NASTIER and STAINER, each worth 7 points.
201 words hide in here. The full 8 letters spell KEYBOARD (18 points), with BAKERY (15) and BARKED (13) close behind.
65 words. APPLES scores 10, APPLE 9 and quieter finds like LAPSE and PEALS are handy for tight boards.
One wildcard turns four letters into 87 words: WORDS, SWORD, DRAWS and WARDS all score 8, since the blank scores zero.
Method
How it works
The solver counts how many of each letter you typed, then checks every dictionary word of a suitable length against those counts. If a word needs more copies of a letter than you have, a wildcard can cover the gap. There is no guessing and no server round trip, just a straight lookup against a list held in your browser's memory.
The full list is ENABLE, a public domain list of about 168,000 words that modern tournament lists are built on. The common list is around 8,000 everyday words. Scores use standard Scrabble letter values, with wildcards worth zero. The list downloads once (about 2 MB) and your browser caches it, so repeat visits are quick and usually work offline.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is this word unscrambler free?
Yes. There is no account, no limit and no paid tier. The whole site is free to use.
How do the wildcards work?
A question mark stands for any letter, like a blank Scrabble tile. You can use up to two. Letters filled by a wildcard score zero and are shown as dashed tiles in the results.
Which dictionary does it use?
The full list is ENABLE, a public domain list of about 168,000 words that tournament lists are built on. The common list is around 8,000 everyday words for when you want familiar answers only.
Why is a word missing that another site accepts?
Word lists differ. ENABLE predates a few modern tournament additions, so QI and ZA are not in it, while XI, XU, JO and KA are. No single list matches every game, so check your game's own dictionary for disputed words.
What do the small numbers on the tiles mean?
They are standard Scrabble letter values. The number after each word is its total. Wildcard letters score zero, which is why some words show a lower total than you might expect.
Does it work offline?
After your first visit the word list is cached by your browser, so repeat visits usually work without a connection.
Is what I type private?
Yes. The solver runs entirely in your browser. Your letters are never transmitted anywhere, and there is nothing for us to log even if we wanted to.
Can I use it for Words with Friends?
Yes, it finds valid words for any tile game. Note the scores shown are Scrabble values; Words with Friends uses slightly different letter values.
