Examples

Worked examples

LISTEN

Six letters, six full anagrams: SILENT, ENLIST, TINSEL, INLETS, ELINTS and LISTEN itself.

TEACHER

A setter's favourite. CHEATER is the joke answer, HECTARE the sneaky one and RETEACH rounds out the set.

STRESSED

The classic mirror pair: STRESSED backwards and rearranged is DESSERTS, the only other valid eight.

ELVIS

Names make good fodder even though results are dictionary words: LIVES, EVILS and VEILS.

Method

How it works

Two words are anagrams when their letter counts match exactly. The solver counts your letters, then walks the dictionary keeping only words with identical counts. With Include shorter words on, it relaxes to words your letters can cover.

The list is ENABLE, about 168,000 public domain words, held in your browser's memory. Nothing you type leaves your device. For letter game scoring, try the Scrabble word finder instead.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What counts as an anagram?

A rearrangement of all the letters, using each exactly once. LISTEN and SILENT are anagrams. LISTEN and LIST are not, because letters were dropped.

How do I spot an anagram in a cryptic crossword?

Look for an indicator word suggesting disorder: mixed, broken, confused, ruined, cooked, at sea, in a mess. The letters to rearrange sit right next to it, and the letter count matches the answer length.

Can it solve multi-word anagrams?

You can enter a phrase, spaces are ignored. Results are single words only, so for a two word answer solve one part at a time or untick the exact length option to explore.

Why does it only show words of the same length?

By definition an anagram uses every letter. Tick Include shorter words if you want partial rearrangements as well.

What is the difference between this and the word unscrambler?

The unscrambler finds words of any length inside your letters. The anagram solver starts from full rearrangements, which is what crossword and puzzle setters usually mean.

Does it know names and places?

No. The list is dictionary words only, so it will not find ELVIS from LIVES. It will happily find LIVES, EVILS and VEILS from ELVIS though.
