D20 roller

The tabletop workhorse, with advantage and disadvantage one tap away. Kept die highlighted, nat 20s celebrated, nat 1s commiserated.

Guide

How to use it

  1. For a plain check, leave it on Normal and tap Roll.
  2. With Advantage, two d20s roll and the higher one counts, the kept die is highlighted, the other fades.
  3. With Disadvantage, the lower of the two counts.
  4. Add your modifier to the kept die yourself, the history keeps the raw rolls for table disputes.

Examples

Reading the rolls

ADV: 8 / 17

Advantage keeps the 17. Two dice with the best kept shifts the average from 10.5 to about 13.8, it is a big bonus, bigger than +3.

DIS: 12 / 3

Disadvantage keeps the 3, and the average drops to about 7.2. Stack the odds before you roll, not after.

NAT 20

A natural 20 comes up 1 roll in 20, but with advantage the chance of at least one is 1 in 10.25. This is why rogues fish for advantage.

Method

How it works

Each d20 is an independent cryptographic draw, advantage and disadvantage roll two dice and keep the higher or lower, exactly as the 5e rules describe, with the kept die highlighted so the table can see the choice was mechanical.

The maths is worth knowing: advantage raises the mean roll by about 3.3 and nearly doubles your chance of hitting high targets, disadvantage mirrors it downward. Both dice always show, transparency is the point.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does advantage roll two dice or reroll one?

Two dice, simultaneously, keep the higher. Rerolling only when unhappy is a different (and stronger) mechanic, this page implements the standard rule.

How much is advantage worth?

On average about +3.3, but it varies with the target: against a DC needing an 11, it takes you from 50% to 75%. It is worth more when the check is a coin-flip.

Do advantage and disadvantage stack?

In 5e rules, no: if you have any of both, they cancel to a normal roll regardless of how many sources apply. Roll Normal in that case.

Does a natural 20 always succeed?

On attack rolls yes (and it crits), on ability checks the rules leave it to the table. The roller calls out the nat 20, your DM decides what it buys.

Can I roll d20s in bulk for the whole party?

Switch to the main dice roller, set d20 and up to ten dice, one roll covers the goblin horde’s saves.

Are online rolls tournament-legal?

Home tables set their own rules, organised play generally wants dice or an approved app. Screen-sharing this page satisfies most groups, the history list is your receipt.
