Passport photo resizer
Turns a suitable photo into the UK digital photo shape, 35×45 mm at 413×531 pixels, without the photo leaving your device. The photo rules themselves are summarised below, follow them before you resize.
Guide
How to use it
- Take the photo first, and take it properly: plain light-grey or cream background, even lighting, face square to the camera, neutral expression, mouth closed, no glasses glare, nothing covering the face.
- Frame it so the head and top of the shoulders fill the shot, the crop here takes the centre of your image.
- Drop the photo in and tap Make passport photo. The output is the standard 35×45 mm ratio at print resolution.
- Check the result against the official rules at gov.uk before submitting, the size being right does not make a non-compliant photo compliant.
Examples
What the spec actually requires
The physical print size for UK passports and most UK visa categories. At 300 DPI that is exactly 413×531 pixels, which is what this page outputs.
The crown-to-chin distance must land between 29 and 34 mm on the printed photo, roughly 65 to 75% of the frame height. Frame your original with headroom to allow it.
The online passport service accepts larger digital photos and crops for you, this fixed-size output matters most for printed applications, visas and services that demand the exact ratio.
Method
How it works
Your image is centre-cropped to the 35:45 ratio and scaled to 413×531 pixels (300 DPI print resolution) on an off-screen canvas, then encoded as a JPG. Nothing is uploaded, a photo of your own face travels nowhere.
What this page deliberately does not do: retouch, adjust lighting, replace backgrounds or verify compliance. Automated "compliance checks" that cannot see the official rules end in rejected applications, read gov.uk’s photo rules and judge against them.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is this photo guaranteed to be accepted?
No tool can promise that. Size and ratio are handled here, but acceptance also depends on lighting, background, expression and recency, which are judged by HM Passport Office against the gov.uk rules.
Can I use a selfie?
Officially discouraged: arm-length distortion changes face proportions. Have someone else take it from about 1.5 metres away, or use a timer.
What background do I need?
Plain light grey or cream for UK passports. A white wall usually passes, patterned or dark backgrounds fail. This tool does not replace backgrounds, that would count as alteration.
Why did the crop cut off my head?
The crop takes the centre of your image. Re-frame the original with the face centred and some headroom, then run it again.
Does this work for US or Schengen photos?
No, those use different sizes (US 2×2 inches, Schengen 35×45 mm with different head-size rules). This page is built to the UK 35×45 spec.
Where are the official rules?
gov.uk, search "passport photo rules". They are short, specific and worth two minutes before you print six copies.
